Diffusion and velocity autocorrelation at the jamming transition.

چکیده
We perform numerical simulations to examine particle diffusion at steady shear in a soft-disk model in two dimensions and zero temperature around the jamming density. We find that the diffusion constant depends on shear rate as D approximately gamma below jamming and as D approximately gammaqD with qD<1 at the transition and set out to relate this to properties of the velocity autocorrelation function. It is found that this correlation function is governed by two processes with different time scales. The first time scale, the inverse of the externally applied shear rate, controls an exponential decay of the correlations whereas the second time scale, equal to the inverse shear stress, governs an algebraic decay with time. The obtained value of qD is related to these properties of the correlation function.

Signatures of incipient jamming in collisional hopper flows
Many disordered systems experience a transition from a fluid-like state to a solid-like state following a sudden arrest in dynamics called jamming. In contrast to jamming in spatially homogeneous systems, jamming in hoppers occurs under extremely inhomogeneous conditions as the gravity-driven flow of grains enclosed by rigid walls converges towards a small opening. In this work, we study veloci...

We present results of numerical investigations of the Nagel-Schreckenberg model, a microscopic traffic flow model based on a cellular automaton. This model exhibits a jamming transition with increasing vehicular density from a free-flow phase to a congested phase. The transition manifests in the behavior of the auto-correlation function which permits the determination of the velocity of upstrea...

متن کاملShear viscosity and diffusion motion of two-dimensional dusty plasma liquids
A molecular dynamics method for studying diffusion motion and shear viscosity is presented for two-dimensional (2D) plasma liquids. The calculations obtained by using the mean-squared displacement (MSD), velocity autocorrelation function (VACF) and the shear autocorrelation function indicate that there is a diffusive motion for the lower coupling range of strongly coupled liquid states. In the ...
